Zoning and Land Use
Shaping Communities Using Equitable and Climate-Smart Zoning
Zoning and land use policies in our communities directly impact the development of our built environment. From infrastructure determining city density to developing transit systems– zoning and land use play a critical role.
Urging our local decision-makers to prioritize climate-smart and community-focused zoning laws can transform and improve the quality of life for residents while also working towards our climate goals. For example, zoning laws that encourage mixed-use neighborhoods and transit-oriented development reduce reliance on motor vehicles and increase energy efficiency.
Land use and local zoning are particularly important when we consider how local history and disparities influence and shape what is approved and built by developers and city governments. Throughout Central Virginia, we can see that many of the same historically underserved communities are also frequently subject to environmental, social, and health injustices.
Advocating for development that prioritizes housing availability and affordability, safety, and walkability for residents while striving for equitable clean energy and transit infrastructure can be a meaningful strategy to mitigate future damage to our environment and community and repair generational harms.
Advocating for Equitable Land Use
C3 believes that local zoning can be used as a tool for reducing greenhouse gasses and building healthy communities. We have worked alongside city governments, local agencies, housing coalitions, local businesses, and other nonprofit partners to advance equitable zoning and land use policies.
