“Charlottesville is a really special place and the place we choose to call home. We’re looking forward to working with GBA and its members to ensure that we are all taking the necessary steps to make Charlottesville an active leader in the fight against climate change. We’d love to work in collaboration with other businesses, thinking outside of the box, to put our minds and resources together to find solutions that will not only reduce emissions but will effect real change.” – Ann Kingston, Artist Manager and Head of Philanthropic Initiatives
Red Light Management
About Us
Coran Capshaw founded Red Light Management in 1991 in Charlottesville, VA, while helping Dave Matthews Band grow organically from local club favorite to one of the most renowned touring groups of all time. Red Light has since developed into the largest independent music management company in the world, managing over 350 artists. Additionally, Red Light has partnered with many businesses nationally and locally, including Sun Tribe Solar and Sun Tribe Development.
Red Light’s commitment to sustainability
Red Light Management is committed to sustainable touring, protecting the environment, and combating climate change. Since its earliest days, Dave Matthews Band has been a leader in sustainability and conservation. The band partnered with The Nature Conservancy to plant a million trees, was recently designated a UN Environment Goodwill Ambassador, and has fully offset all touring-related carbon emissions since the band’s inception.
Red Light has been a leader in working with its artists to integrate sustainability into touring operations, including fueling tour buses with biodiesel, eliminating single-use plastic bottles at shows, prioritizing locally grown food, and engaging fans in environmental actions.
Red Light Management has also been actively involved with the revitalization of Charlottesville’s public housing, which will include solar on all of the sites and will meet some of the highest environmental building standards in the world, including the Passive House standard on South First Street. That will be a first of its kind in the state of Virginia for public housing. We also have an active recycling campaign in our office, and our proximity to downtown allows many of our employees to walk to work or ride their bikes. Additionally, Red Light Management’s sister companies, Music Today and Starr Hill Beer, are in the former Con-Agra building and feature an extensive rooftop solar array.
Red Light and the Green Business Alliance
Red Light Management is proud to partner with C3 and its members to take collective steps in reducing our climate impact. Given our organization’s partnerships with other businesses, we look forward to developing and sharing best practices.
Sustainability Projects in Motion
Red Light Management is currently involved in the revitalization of public housing in Charlottesville. To ensure that each renovation and redevelopment is environmentally sustainable, we are working with our local partners Suntribe Solar to include solar energy on each of the sites. The new construction at South First Street will be certified Passive House, an ultra-low energy standard, making it the first public housing site in the state of Virginia to achieve that standard. By collaborating with like-minded and sustainable focused companies, we will work to provide renewable energy technology and job training opportunities that are accessible to underserved communities in Charlottesville—we would welcome C3 and GBA’s members to join us in this effort. In addition, each of our redevelopment projects are Viridiant (Earthcraft Virginia) certified, utilizing the latest building science to create structures that are more affordable, more livable, and more durable.
