Global Leader in Allergen Testing

About Inbio

InBio (formerly Indoor Biotechnologies) was founded in 1999 by Dr. Martin D. Chapman, formerly Professor of Medicine and Microbiology at the University of Virginia and a member of the UVA Asthma and Allergic Diseases Center.  InBio specializes in manufacturing biologics for allergy and asthma. The company is recognized as the world leader in assessment of environmental exposure to allergens - in the home, workplace, schools and commercial buildings. The company manufactures highly purified allergens for allergy research and diagnostics, and is internationally recognized for research on allergen structure, function and immune recognition. InBio’s mission is to improve the quality of life of patients with allergy and asthma.

Being a Leader Means Leading Outside the Lab as well as Inside

Five years ago, InBio fully renovated and moved into its current headquarters location on Harris Street in Charlottesville. The 12,000 square foot office and lab space was outfitted with four new rooftop HVAC units with Intelligent Equipment® to monitor energy consumption. The entire space was designed with high efficiency plumbing and lighting fixtures throughout. In 2018, a 155.25 kWp solar array was installed that provides approximately 40% of energy used. InBio has been actively participating in the Charlottesville sustainability and green business community since 2013, winning two awards (2014 and 2019) as part of the Better Business Challenge.

Why the GBA Is Important to Us

The Green Business Alliance is proving invaluable access to knowledge, resources, and community to organizations in the region. The ability to reach out to the GBA network for informed guidance on a wide range of topics gives Inbio a clear path to continue the mission for increased sustainability.

InBio believes in creating a company culture of sustainability. Providing employees with incentives for electric vehicles, home solar arrays, and green living will be an ongoing focus. Supporting employees to be committed to sustainability at home as well at work is a key foundation to create a lasting impact.  As a biotech research and manufacturing facility, reduction of energy use is a challenge with the amount of equipment that requires constant and high levels of power. To meet energy reduction goals while not compromising operations, InBio is assessing potential improvements to the building including new energy efficient windows and HVAC system modifications.
