“At Hexagon, we work closely with communities across the US to develop renewable energy projects that deliver real, lasting environmental and economic benefits. As we work to deploy clean energy, we must also do our part to reduce our consumption. The Green Business Alliance leverages the amazing expertise found right here in our hometown to reduce our climate impact.”

Hexagon Develops Green Energy

At just over 25 employees, Hexagon Energy is an independent energy development firm. We believe that the path to a clean energy future requires a range of new sources and technologies. We develop projects across six diverse energy solutions with one common goal—powering a clean future. Over the past 24 years, Hexagon Energy’s principals have developed and financed 2,881 MW of operating energy projects in 16 U.S. states and abroad, representing over $1.5 billion in invested capital. The projects include utility-scale wind, solar, and natural gas projects ranging from a few megawatts to over a gigawatt. We pair this industry experience with dedicated, personal service to build projects that benefit property owners, ratepayers, and investors.

Sustainable at our Core

Sustainability is a core company value and drives our mission to deliver clean energy and replace fossil fuels. Beyond emissions reductions, we seek additional opportunities to deploy sustainability in our project design, multiplying the total benefits of each project. Our Albemarle County project, Woodridge Solar, will reduce emissions by 140,000 tons of CO2 each year and is designed to create new meadow pollinator habitats under and around the project area and achieve Virginia Pollinator-SMART certification. In partnership with Virginia’s first net-zero meadery, Thistlerock, Woodridge will create a new home for honeybees.

Hexagon is also dedicated to finding what changes we can make to reduce the footprint of our business. Our goal is to make sustainable choices easy and rewarding. We offer incentives to reward our employees for making sustainable choices, such as our Bike/Walk-to-Work program. We encourage the practice of recycling all organic material by working with the local group, Black Bear Composting. In addition to composting our waste, we have partnered with another Virginia group that prioritizes recycling all shredded paper for document destruction needs.

Why We’ve Joined the Green Business Alliance

As a small, privately owned local business here in Charlottesville, we are fortunate to be surrounded by a community of companies that share similar goals toward sustainability. We look forward to hearing lessons learned from the first cohort and applying those to our strategies. Being in the Green Business Alliance allows us to collaborate and work alongside others, ultimately taking us one step closer to reaching our goal of a cleaner future.

OUR GOALS

With the support of C3 and other GBA members in this second cohort, we aim to reduce our emissions by 45% by 2027. We will strive to achieve this goal by working with our building managers to implement better energy usage practices. We can reduce our electricity and natural gas usage by converting existing fluorescent lighting to LEDS, updating our HVAC controls to utilize smart thermostats, and more.
