Improving the Health of the Community with Cutting-Edge Technology and Personalized Care

About Martha Jefferson Hospital

Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital’s mission is to improve health every day. Since its founding more than 100 years ago, Sentara Martha Jefferson has constantly evolved to meet the diverse healthcare needs of the patients who trust us with their care. As a member of Sentara Healthcare, we are committed to delivering a distinctive combination of cutting-edge technology along with our Caring Tradition, the promise of personalized care tailored to the needs of each individual patient.

Sustainability At The Hospital

The design of our Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital at Pantops was meant to embody that commitment. To date, our design efforts have yielded:

  • LEED certification, which challenged us to think through every decision. With our LEED certification, infrastructure, and proper maintenance our facility operates at peak performance.

  • High-Performance building automation system, giving us full control and monitoring of all infrastructure systems.  Scheduled shutdown on over 50% of HVAC systems. HVAC Setback program.

  • Heat recovery chiller and turn down of fire tube boilers.

  • Computerized lighting systems and LED OR surgical lights, which reduced lighting during unoccupied times through schedules and motion sensors.

  • UVC lights in all air handling units, which not only eliminates bacteria growth but also keeps the cooling coils in a clean, free flow condition all year.

  • Low flow plumbing fixtures

  • Landscape irrigation fed by a stormwater retention pond.

Why the Green Business Alliance is Important To us

Being a member of the Green Business Alliance supports our goal of reducing our carbon footprint. Collaborating with the other members of the GBA allows us an opportunity to share ideas for sustainability, look at new ways to achieve energy efficiency, and explore successes of our counterparts that we may not have considered in the past.

Our Plan

Sentara’s goal is to reduce our carbon footprint by 50 percent by 2025. Among the projects we hope to pursue in this effort is to explore the possibilities for using solar power and upgrading our exterior lights to LEDs.
