Youth Becoming a Voice for Their Communities
The effects of climate change are not felt evenly across our communities. BIPOC, low-income, and underserved communities around the world, and here at home, are disproportionately impacted by climate change. If we truly want to confront the climate crisis, we must also provide the resources and solutions to communities that will endure the greatest impacts. C3 and Piedmont Housing Alliance (PHA) have partnered to create a new program designed to engage underrepresented youth in justice-focused climate action and advocacy. By equipping these young climate leaders with the right tools, knowledge, and resources, we can build climate resiliency in communities that are most vulnerable to climate change.
Over this summer initiative, local high school residents of PHA’s Friendship Court discussed topics around climate change and justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, and acquire the leadership, public speaking, and advocacy skills to become JEDI+Climate Ambassadors for their community.
The teens also worked with Light House Studio to create a video project depicting what climate justice and social justice mean to their families, friends, and neighbors.
First day of the program
At the end of this program, the teen ambassadors will host a community event at Friendship Court where the teen ambassadors will lead a “Minute to Win It” activities challenge tournament, share what they’ve learned, and gather support for their advocacy campaigns.
