Charlottesville Must Plan for Climate!

Add Your Voice!

The City of Charlottesville is currently considering its Comprehensive and Strategic Plans for our community. These two important compasses for future decision-making are only developed every 4 to 5 years, and climate change has never before been prioritized in either document. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving climate justice, energy equity, and transportation equity must be considered in Charlottesville’s long-range blueprint for the future.

The Community Climate Collaborative (C3) is urging Charlottesville City Council to adopt a resolution to ensure that: the City’s Comprehensive Plan and Strategic Plan are developed with a climate lens that serves as a guide for the prioritization of intersectional solutions that advance multiple community goals.

Letter to Charlottesville City Council on Strategic and Comprehensive Planning

Dear Charlottesville City Council:

As residents of the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County, we share a common goal to protect the health and vitality of our community against the effects of climate change on our built, social, and natural systems. The future of our community, our children, and our legacy is dependent on our commitment to reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

So, we thank you for setting leadership targets to reduce community-wide GHG emissions by 45% by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2050. We also acknowledge that ensuring an equitable transition to clean energy and a sustainable future also means addressing the needs of all members of our community.

The City of Charlottesville is currently undertaking its Comprehensive and Strategic Planning processes. These important blueprints for future decision-making also present an opportunity to address multiple community goals simultaneously.

Climate touches every aspect of our community — our health, our food, our economic well-being, and the affordability of our homes and businesses. We cannot wait another five years to get serious about our commitment to climate action.

Therefore, we ask Charlottesville City Council to adopt a resolution to develop the City’s Comprehensive and Strategic Plans with a climate lens that serves  as a guide for the prioritization of intersectional solutions which simultaneously advance multiple City goals.

Thank you, again, for recognizing the need to address this important issue. We believe that our City has the creativity, leadership, and community resources that will allow us to tackle many of the important issues in our City together.

Sincerely,
