Juneteenth Celebrations and the Fight for Environmental Equity in Virginia

Cities across Virginia have a rich and intricate racial history, entwining the struggles of marginalized communities with issues of race, socioeconomic status, and environmental equity. As we celebrate Juneteenth this upcoming Monday, a day marking the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, it is crucial to acknowledge the deep-rooted environmental injustices that have disproportionately affected communities of color.

In the Charlottesville and Richmond areas, historically Black neighborhoods continue to face higher levels of pollution, limited green spaces, and inadequate and inefficient infrastructure. These disparities have resulted in significant and enduring health and socioeconomic inequalities. When we reflect on the racial history embodied in Virginia cities, we are reminded of the urgent need to address environmental injustices across the state. That’s why at C3 we advocate for equitable policies, foster active community engagement, and promote sustainable practices that prioritize the well-being of all residents.

We are committed to advancing justice in the communities we serve, and therefore, we want to honor the historic occasion that is Juneteenth. My summer Development Intern, Ava Birdwell, researched the various events happening around Charlottesville and Richmond, and we are encouraging our staff, board, partners, and supporters to participate in these equity-driven efforts happening throughout the region.
