Staff Picks for Environmental Films Worth Watching
Stay cool on the couch this summer by settling in to watch a thought-provoking environmental film. From documentaries to family-friendly movies to think-pieces, our staff put together this list of their top picks. It’s our hope there is something for everyone!
Caetano: Home (2009)
“I liked Home because it's beautiful, artistic (the director, Yann Arthus Bertrand, is a very renowned photographer and the soundtrack is 100% original by Armand Amar... with lots of elements from different cultures around the world), and because it sort of shows ‘Earth's perspective’ on nature/wildlife and humans.”

Coles: Wall-E
“The movie Wall-E does a great job of showing that, no matter how much technology and artificial joy we produce, humans will always have an essential connection and fascination with nature. Though at times the depiction of future on earth is very bleak, it ends with a hopeful message that it’s never too late to take better care of the planet.”
How to watch it: Disney+
Maggie: The Condor and the Eagle (2019)
“I led a screening of this film back when I worked at Appalachian Voices, and it's incredibly powerful.”

Sarah: Life
“Life is beautiful to watch and full of biology facts as it describes the complexities of life on earth. I especially like this series because rather than showing nature in a vacuum, it also tells about the human impacts on these lives. The way it is presented makes me want to fight for the preservation of the natural world!”
How to watch it: Amazon Prime
Latricia: The Man Who Fell to Earth
“The Man Who Fell to Earth is brilliantly written, and I appreciate how climate and social justice themes are written into this show. It captures the power of love, hope, compassion, and grace when we allow ourselves to work together and trust ourselves and one another.”
How to watch it: Showtime
Teri: Don’t Look Up
“If you are in the mood for a real THINKER movie, Don't Look Up is a must-watch. For those who may not know, Leonardo di Caprio is a huge environmentalist and influencer and dedicates millions in time and money to the cause. He stars in this film with Jennifer Lawrence. My son encouraged me to watch it! He said, "Mom, it's gonna be your new favorite movie!" Not sure I would say it’s my favorite, but definitely was thought-provoking and led to interesting discussions.”
How to watch it: Netflix
