Picturing Climate Justice Opens this Weekend!

This Saturday the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center, along with the UVA Equity Center and UVA Sustainability, will launch their Picturing Climate Justice exhibit featuring two artistic elements of C3’s 2021 Climate Justice Summer Camp program: Imagining Summertime: a Youth Collaging and Mapping Project and Painted Heatstripe.

Background

During the summer of 2021, C3’s teen interns worked with the Charlottesville Mural Project, the Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative, the Uhruru Foundation, and youth from the Boys and Girls Club of Central Virginia on a variety of climate justice activities. The culmination of the camp was a climate justice mural, now installed at the local chapter of the Red Cross building on Rose Hill Drive. The mural uses art as a vehicle for the important message of climate justice and tells the story of Charlottesville’s changing climate since 1865 and what those changes mean for the people, animals, and environment in our community. Chief Scientist at the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond, Jeremy Hoffman created the temperature stripe and local artist James “Jae” Johnson superimposed images of the flora, fauna, and people who may be impacted by climate change.

In addition to the Imagining Summertime mural, the exhibit will feature a variety of work created by youth in the local community with groups like Cultivate Charlottesville, Wildrock, and the UVA School of Architecture Project Pipeline Youth Design Mentorship Program.
