2-in-1: Dad Gifts that Do Climate and Community Good!
Father’s Day is fast approaching. Are you ready?
This year we put together a list of locally-inspired gift ideas from the network of businesses and nonprofits that we work with. Give a gift that honors dads on their big day, at the same time help local businesses that are feeling the impacts of COVID 19.
Foodie Dad
The Pie Chest is just around the corner from C3’s office, so we can testify to their yumminess. They don’t just serve up indulgent sweet pies for Dad; they’ve got savory ones, too. So does the Pie Guy, (who was a winner in last years Better Business Challenge BTW!) Fig Bistro offers takeout and delivery as well as Roots’ “radically healthy” easy-to-transport bowls. Firefly offers plenty of vegetarian plates and is one of the first Green Restaurant Association restaurants in Charlottesville. And guess what sweetens the deal? We are working with all four of these local restaurants on their Better Business Challenge goals! All are currently doing take-out and/or delivery. Just click on the links above.
Gear-Punk Dad
Though High-Tor Gear Exchange still remains closed, a gift certificate is available for this family-owned gear exchange retailer for your dad, the Outdoorsman. Camping and outdoor sports gear of all shapes and sizes abound in this family-run store that we love. Just call 434-260-4026.
You-Might-Need-a-Makeover Dad
Has Dad’s hair gone a little rogue? How about a gift certificate to Hairsmith and Co? Just email Megan Smith-Watson, store owner at info@hairsmithandco.com. A new “do” along with a custom t-shirt, face mask, or other type of schwag of your own choosing and design from local Custom Ink might be the ticket this holiday!
Give-It-a-DIY-Rest Dad
Is your dad a busy body? Always working on a lot of “ongoing” projects --if you know what I mean? Why not let him lounge on the couch for once and have an energy-efficient expert come in and do some work for him. Think Little crew is up to the task! They’ll give your home a thorough energy assessment and report. If your dad still insists on doing it himself, John (the owner) can help Dad prioritize which might deliver a bigger bang for the buck.
Health-Conscious Dad
The Seraphic Group is passionate about brain-boosting, gut-strengthening soil-derived products for Dad’s best health. Their product Restore or Ion Biome can be found at local natural food stores like Rebecca’s, Integral Yoga, Sunrise Herb Shoppe, and the M Clinic.
Oh-So-Social-and-Suave Dad
If your suave Dad likes to go out on the town, a membership to Common House or donation to Live Arts might be the perfect gift — he’ll be ready once we can return to social occasions. Common House is a meeting place for those who enjoy living life to its fullest. They’ve got dining, drinks, private meeting space for socializing or business pursuits, a pool table, library, rooftop seating and more! Then there’s Live Arts — since 1990 they’ve offered live performance art drama, dance, comedy, music, and improv. Due to lack of ticket revenue, they’ve been especially impacted by COVID. Though no shows are currently lined up for Dad to attend, we suggest donating to their Forging Ahead Campaign to support this fabulous art venue. Their Development Coordinator, Shelby Edwards, shared this with us, “As we head into our 30th anniversary season, be a part of bringing Charlottesville together in a post COVID-19 world. Through creative expression. Through meaning-making. Through volunteer engagement. Together, we can restore the heart as well as the health of the community.” Your gift help will go toward helping 1,200 of their volunteers launch provocative plays, exploratory workshops, and youth camps for the community!
Retired-But-Active Dad
Want a gift that lasts all year long? How about a membership to the new Center at Belvedere-- this newly constructed facility is for adults 50 and older and offers/will offer over 100+ programs per week. From pilates and fitness coaching, to language and arts classes, and many more (though skateboarding is not on the June calendar - sorry)! Memberships range from a Standard membership ($180/year that includes access to about 80% of our programs) to a Prime membership ($480/year which allows access to fee-based programs and the equipped fitness room). With a Prime membership, Dad will receive a one month trial membership to share with a friend or family member, and a $20 gift card to the new Greenberry’s Coffee Co. at The Center at Belvedere (scheduled to open for take-out in June). Join here or contact Judy Gardner at judy@thecentercville.org or by phone at 434-220-9754 for more info. Another option: make a donation.
Give Back Dad
Speaking of giving. For the Dad who has a passion for a cause or who doesn’t really need anything make a donation in his honor! This gift will fuel positive action in the community that aims at solving big problems, like the climate crisis, food insecurity, racial injustice, and/or affordable housing! The Legal Aid Justice Center, Loaves and Fishes Pantry (who has seen a 27% increase in their need for services), Piedmont Housing Alliance, Southern Environmental Law Center, and we at the Community Climate Collaborative happily accept donations.
We hope this gift-giving guide helps you find the perfect gift for Dad while also helping our community at this challenging time!
