Loaves and Fishes Aids the Community During Crisis
In the midst of COVID-19 and the pressure that this has put on businesses and families, we could all use a dose of positivity and hope.
Which is why we want to share this story from Better Business Challenge participant, Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry. Being one of the largest food distribution partners in the region, Loaves and Fishes plays a critical role in feeding the community. Amid this uncertainty, the work they do is more important and impactful than ever. We talked with Jane Colony Mills, Executive Director of the food pantry, to learn more.
Among a multitude of services, the organization provides groceries for families in need. Jane told us that the number has reached “well over 400 households” in recent weeks. What they can’t use for groceries, they redistribute to other organizations in need like The Salvation Army, The Haven, and the Shelter for Help and Emergency.
As a Challenge participant, Jane emphasized the organization’s commitment to waste reduction: “I joined the Better Business Challenge because we have a closed circle in terms of food waste—reducing food waste from grocery stores or UVA Dining. We’re then getting it to people in need, directly or through other services in town.” The remaining food waste goes to local pig farmers to keep the food out of landfills.
As a non-profit who owns their building, they’ve been working on their energy efficiency following an energy assessment done by Better Business Challenge 2020 Sponsor Think Little. They are also in the process of exploring rooftop solar.
Amid our current public health crisis, Loaves and Fishes is more committed than ever to supporting the community, “It’s our duty to keep feeding people for as long as we can.”
